Deane Richardson

Deane Richardson, 95, passed away on Sept. 22, 2013. He graduated from Bradley University in Peoria, IL, in 1941. He moved to California to attend Stanford University and during that time joined the U.S. Army Air Corp. in 1943. He served as a physical education and wounded reconditioning officer. Following his honorable discharge in April 1946, he returned to California. He graduated from Stanford with a doctorate degree in education. He began teaching and coaching at University of the Pacific. He took a faculty position at UCLA where he served as freshman basketball coach under John Wooden. In 1959, he and his wife moved to Denver where he taught and chaired the physical education department at University of Denver. In 1963, they moved to Fridley where Deane taught and chaired the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department for Men at the University of Minnesota. In 1970 they moved to Tempe where he again taught and chaired the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department at ASU. He retired in 1983. In 1991 they moved to Rapid City, in 1995 they moved to the Twin Cities and in 2002 they moved to Northfield, MN. He taught fitness classes at Northfield Retirement Community. Survivors include three children, nine grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, one sister, nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis, his parents and his brother. A Celebration of Deane's Life will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at Chapel of Northfield Retirement Community. Interment will be in Oaklawn Cemetery in Northfield. Visitation will be at the NRC Chapel on Friday, one hour prior to service. Memorials are preferred to Northfield Retirement Community for fitness, grounds, or the chapel, or Bethel Lutheran Church. (Source: ASU Foundation)
