ASU remembers
Darwyn Linder
Psychology Department - 1972-2006
ASU gained significant scientific and administrative strength by bringing aboard into the Psychology Department Dr. Darwyn Linder. We are saddened by the recent news of his passing in 2022, in Littleton, Colorado. Darwyn received his B.A. degree in Psychology from Macalaster College in Minnesota in 1957 and his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1965, specializing in social psychology, psychological measurement and inferential statistics. He then joined the faculty at Duke University, receiving Assistant and Associate Professor status. He was hired into the ASU Psychology Department in 1972, joining as Professor and Director of the newly-founded Graduate Training Program in Social Psychology. He served as the Interim Chair of the Psychology Department in 1995-1996. He retired from ASU in 2006, moving to Littleton, Colorado, where he is survived by his wife Dr. Marie Linder. In addition to the leadership of the Social Psychology program, Darwyn was engaged in a number of administrative activities at ASU. In 1980-82 he was appointed Founding Director of the University Program for Faculty Development. From 1985 to 1989 he was co-director of the ASU Applied Sport Psychology Program, subsequently serving on its Executive Committee. He chaired the Faculty Development Advisory Committee and served on the University Strategic Planning Group for Mathematics. He also served as the President of the ASU Academic Assembly Senate in 1997-1998. In addition to these administrative duties, Darwyn maintained an active program of research, teaching, and mentoring in his areas of his specialty, interpersonal attraction, small group behavior, and the commons dilemma/social traps. His many doctoral students have gone on to outstanding careers in their respective areas of expertise. Always supportive of higher education, the Linders established in the Psychology Department the Darwyn and Marie Linder Graduate Fellowship in Social Psychology Endowment. They also established a scholarship fund at Macalaster College, his undergraduate alma mater. After his retirement from ASU in 2006, Darwyn and Marie retired to Littleton, Colorado. This brought them near to their most favored activities, hiking, skiing, and golfing. Friends interested in contributing to the Linder scholarship fund in the ASU Psychology Department can contact the Department for further information. |
