Dr. Clayton R. Brower attended Syracuse University where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees.  Dr. Brower earned his Doctorate in Education from Columbia University. 

During his senior year of college, he enlisted in the Army. He served three years as a Psychological Assistant at the 96th General Hospital N P United Kingdom.

Starting his career in 1948, he became a Social Studies teacher and Director of Adult Education at Pulaski Academy and Central School, Pulaski, NY. In 1955, he became Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Plainfield, New Jersey, serving in that position for seven years.

In 1962, Clayton became a Professor of Education at Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey TCNJ). For eight years, he served as Chairman of the Education Department and several Deanships – only interrupted by a six-month assignment to join a New York University NYU public school development team in the US Virgin Islands.

Brower became TSC-TCNJ's thirteenth president in 1970. Under his 10 years of leadership, the college began its rise to becoming one of the top public colleges in the country. TCNJ has named the Clayton R. Brower Student Center in his honor.

During retirement, Brower was President of the Arizona State University Library Associates. He was an advisor to the Cultural and Affairs Committee of ASU West. 

After retiring, Clayton served as President of the Mercer County (Trenton, Princeton) Chamber of Commerce.Clayton and Dorothy retired to Sun City West in 1982. He also served on Boards of the Symphony of the West Valley and the Sun Dome Performing Arts Association.

Dr. Brower was preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, a son a daughter, 2 grandsons, a granddaughter, three great-granddaughters, and great-grandson.
