May 29, 2019

Charles Dennis Obney, 75, passed away May 29, 2019. Charles became heavily involved in the community when he moved to Kingman in October 1988. He was a member of the Kingsmen for many years and at the time of death, was looking forward to this year's rodeo. Two of the numerous other groups that Charles dedicated his heart and time to were the Kingman Route 66 Rotary Club, of which he was a member for 27 years, serving as president in 1996-1997, and the Kingman Elks Lodge No. 468, of which he was also a 27-year member, and served for many years as Trustee. He retired from Yellow Freight Lines in 2008. Transportation was near and dear to Charles, who also was on the committee that brought KART to fruition, and a member of the Kingman Airport Authority, which was chosen as Airport of the Year in 2002 when he served as its president. While living in Phoenix he assisted in forming the original committee to develop ASU West out of frustration there was not a university in West Phoenix to complete his degree once he earned his associate's degree in business from Glendale Community College. He also served as Student Body Vice President of Evening Students while he attended GCC. Charles was predeceased by three brothers. He is survived by his wife, La Verne Obney, two daughters, six grandchildren, one great-grandson and many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life for Charles was held on Friday, July 12 at the Elks Lodge No. 468, 900 Gates Ave., Kingman, Arizona 86401. (Source: ASU Foundation)
