Carol Hansen Skoglund, 90, passed away on January 6, 2015. She received her Bachelor and Master of Science Degrees from ASU in 1968 and 1974 respectively. While studying and working as a graduate teaching assistant at ASU, Carol co-founded the Southwestern Malacological Society. During this time, she also maintained numerous service positions for the Western Society of Malacologists, as well as starting a retail mail order shell business (Panamic Specimen Shells), which flourished from 1974 to 1987. She became a world-renowned expert in Panamic mollusks, contributing to over 50 scientific publications. She specialized in gathering and identifying shells no larger than a grain of sand, which could only be seen through a microscope. Twelve species of marine shells have been named in her honor. As a result of her research associations with the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, Carol donated her impressive private collection of over 50,000 specimens (mostly self-collected from Mexico to Ecuador) to the museum in 2010. Carol is survived by a daughter, a son, four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a sister. Memorial donations "in memory of Carol Skoglund" may be made to: Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History (Malacology), 2559 Puesta del Sol, Santa Barbara, CA 93105.
