Carl A. Schnaitman, 79, passed away on August 10, 2016. Carl went to Earlham College in Indiana, and then Syracuse University where he received a BS in Forestry as well as his Master of and PhD in Science. He completed a Fellowship program in 1967 at Johns Hopkins University before coming to UVA as a professor in the Microbiology department where he worked for the next 23 years. In 1989, Carl became the department chair in the Microbiology department at ASU. His extensive work in Molecular biology research aided the launch of an exciting time of discovery for the human genome. His research has been published, and subsequently cited over 3,000 times in scientific publications. After his wife Lenore Schnaitman passed away in 2003, Carl returned to Charlottesville. He is survived by his wife of ten years, Cynthia Schnaitman, a son, step daughter, two stepsons, four grandchildren and a niece. He was predeceased by his sister, a niece and nephew.
