About 50 ASURA members attended the 2009 Annual Meeting of the ASU Retirees Association to celebrate the conclusion of a most successful year.

The meeting was held on Thursday, April 16, in the Alumni Lounge in the Memorial Union Building (MU 202) on the ASU Tempe Campus. The 2010 Annual Meeting is scheduled to be held on Saturday, April 17, 2010 in the same room.

At the meeting President Val Peterson announced that recent voting on proposed new Bylaws resulted in near-unanimous approval. The new Bylaws are now in effect.

President Peterson also introduced newly elected and appointed Board Members. The following five were elected to three-year terms that will end with the Annual Meeting in April, 2012:

  • Gary Anderson
  • Rose Minetti
  • Carolyn Minner
  • William Moor
  • Lonnie Ostrom

There was very little difference in vote counts for each of the eight people who agreed to be candidates. The following three people have been appointed to fill vacancies on the Board. Their terms will end with the April, 2011 Annual Meeting, since they are all replacing people whose terms were to have ended at that time:

  • James Fordemwalt
  • Jo Madonna
  • William Stasi

President Val Peterson thanked everyone who voted in both elections. We had a pretty good response. Val also introduced the Officers that will lead ASURA in the coming year. These are:

  • President - Mary Stevens
  • Past President - Val Peterson
  • Vice President - Connie McNeill
  • Secretary - Jo Madonna
  • Treasurer - Joyce Harman Diaz

The Annual Meeting provided an opportunity for us to recognize the activities and accomplishments of the organization and the contributions of our members. We also enjoyed an interesting talk by Diane Gruber of the Osher Life Long Learning program at ASU's West campus. She stimulated our thinking as retirees about the need for continual learning in our lives.

Most of all, this event was an opportunity to celebrate with good friends and to make new acquaintances. We thank everyone who was able to attend.

The ASURA Annual Report for 2008-2009 was distributed at the meeting. This report summarizes the activities of ASURA for the year.
