Hiking Is Fun!

By Anna M. Shivers

Hiking was just another word in my vocabulary until the ASU Retirement Association invited me to get involved in this activity because several retirees marked "HIKING" on their Activity Questionnaire.

Jean Jacques Rousseau, the French writer and political philosopher in the 18th century, challenged people with his "back to nature" call. He would be overjoyed to be living in 21st century Arizona – with all of our opportunities to connect with nature!

Hiking in Arizona

Our state is one of the most environmentally diverse and beautiful places on earth with its rugged beauty, natural resources, lakes, state parks, wildlife and countless hiking trails. Hiking is indeed the most natural way to experience and appreciate Arizona's wonders. I would be remiss if I didn't also mention that hiking provides much-needed physical activity that challenges our bodies to new adventures and enhances our quality of life.

A Trail for Everyone!

Arizona has a hiking trail for everyone. There are state, county, and city hiking trails and numerous state parks. Romantic full moon hikes and wildflower hikes in March can be an exciting adventure. There are biking trails, even wheelchair accessible trails and many, many more.

This Month’s Featured Park – South Mountain

South Mountain [entrance to park located at the southern most end of Central Avenue] has 18 trails with lengths from 1 to 14 miles with many degrees of difficulty and elevation. There are even horse riding stables close to the entry of the park! The South Mountain Education Center is located on the north side entry from Central Avenue. The Center also has two Mountain Rangers that help with planning and educating groups about the mountain and its many hiking trails, (a request form must be filled out ahead of time). The Center has many great resources, and is open Tues – Sat. from 9 to 3 pm, and Sun. from 9 am to 2 pm. For more information call (602) 534-6324.
